Night was closing quickly around me as the final, faint grey tendrils of sunset faded on the horizon. Gravel crunched beneath my feet with every step, so loud that I was sure that any second someone would stick their head out the window and scream at me to hush up, the way they do when Old Man Barley goes on one of his drunken raves. It is curious how things that seem so innocent in the daytime, so insignificant, can suddenly become your betrayer once the sky turns black. I ducke
